Documentary series shows GLBT lives as they really are

by Anthony Glassman

Pride month is, first and foremost, about people's lives, the ordinary, everyday LGBT people struggling to make it through the day.

Cable's Cinemax movie channel seems to understand that, and is devoting a month of Reel Life documentaries to those struggles. The first, He's Having a Baby, debuted on

really are Roseland

isn't a comedy, like Hedwig and the Angry Inch or Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, or something horribly tragic, like anything relating to Brandon Teena.

No Dumb Questions is the next film, premiering on June 18. Also dealing with transgender issues, the film follows three girls, aged 6 to 11 years old, as they learn more about their uncle Bill and his decision

to transition into their Aunt Barbara. The film not only gives an interesting and sensitive look at the issue of transitioning, but also provides insight into youth dealing with the complexities of gender.

Finally, on June 25 Cinemax debuts Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House, detailing a story of deep social and historical significance.

Ruthie and Connie were both Jewish housewives in Brooklyn in the 1960s. As their friendship grew over the years, they realized that there was

June 4. However, being cable, it will most likely be rerun, so here's a rundown:

Jeff Danis, Hollywood talent agent, has decided that he wants to have a child. He's nearly 50 and his nesting urge has kicked in. How this will affect the comfortable world in which he and his partner of 20 years, Don Pike, live is anybody's guess.

On June 11, All About My Father, which played at the Cleveland International Film Festival in March, debuts. Even Benestad, the director, tells his father's story. It's not easy being a respected doctor and a transsexual in a small Norwegian town, but the elder Benestad felt the need to be true to herself. It makes a nice change to see something about the transgender community that

ostracism, isolation and separation from their children, they divorced their husbands and moved in together.

Ruthie's stress over the relationship and the homophobia they faced led her to contemplate suicide at one point, but they dealt with their issues and came out swinging, suing the New York City Board of Education for partner benefits in 1988.

Having shows like Queer as Folk on Showtime and Six Feet Under on HBO have made headway in terms of gay representation, but they no more represent real life for LGBT Americans than Buffy the Vampire Slayer was an accurate depiction of a typical high school student. These films, however, show life as it is, and will bring greater understanding than Will & Grace ever could.
